Hazel - 1925Hobby Horse Ranch was designed and built in 1929, by famed Taos illustrator Frank Hoffman and his wife, (and frequent model), Hazel. Nestled on seven acres of verdant alfalfa fields, the ranch became a passionate on-going project for Frank and Hazel, who ultimately expanded their home with the addition of two casitas and a large house. Eventually, the rambling original structure was split into several units. Hazel developed a deep fondness for one of these units and it eventually became her "hideaway." This special apartment is now available as a vacation rental. This is a unique opportunity to experience the authentic "Old Taos." Unlike so many newer resorts which simply provide a facade of Taos style, Hazel's Hideaway is authentic in every way. Except for a few modern amenities, Hazel's is virtually unchanged since the days when Hazel was "lady of the manor." Although Hobby Horse Ranch is only minutes from the center of town, it is a quiet, rural haven, perfectly suited for an artist's retreat, or a simple, peaceful vacation.

Though favored by Hazel as her reclusive retreat, the Hideaway was often the setting for her intimate champagne and bubble bath parties, and was even put to use as a place of exile for Hazel’s incorrigible second husband, Spencer, whose escapades with the fair ladies of Taos often left him in ill favor with his wife

Over the years, many Taos artists have kept studios at Hobby Horse Ranch, and that tradition continues today, as two well known painters maintain studios in the compound. Actor Dennis Hopper is among the many notables who, over the years, have called Hobby Horse Ranch "home."

Hazel - 1927Though just a couple blocks removed from Taos’ main thoroughfare of Paseo del Pueblo Sur, and a major shopping center, the ranch maintains its original peaceful ambiance. Surrounded by graceful adobe walls, endless skies, cottonwoods, and the foothills of the Sangre de Cristos, you will bask in the tranquil magic of Northern New Mexico.

Hazel’s Hideaway is a traditionally constructed, thick-walled, adobe one bedroom apartment, with a queen-sized bed, and an additional futon in the living area, which comfortably accommodates three people. There is a full kitchen stocked with dishes, cooking equipment, coffee maker, and a nice selection of coffee, teas, and condiments. For an exotic touch, the spacious bathroom has a large kiva fireplace. The living area has a massive, traditional kiva fireplace as well, and should you choose to remain in contact with the outside world, there is cable TV, a VCR, a Fax-phone with answering machine, and a dedicated phone line for internet access for your laptop computer. Videos and a small library are also provided. There is no daily maid service, but for our guests that stay more than one week, linen changes and cleaning will be provided. A washer and dryer are just steps away in the small building outside your back door. In the summer, you will enjoy relaxing under the long covered portal which leads to your front door, or in the rear patio, where chairs, a table, and umbrella are provided. Hazel’s Hideaway is ready for you. All you need to bring is yourself, and maybe a friend.

Hazel’s Hideaway is a unique retreat… As a guest, you will step back into history, and find yourself embraced by the authentic spirit of the Southwest!
